A new effort is emerging from a cross section of trade groups with a goal of having impact on policy decisions aimed at reducing plastic waste.
The Recycling Leadership Council: Taking Action to Reduce Plastic Waste was revealed Jan. 15 and includes recycling, manufacturing, packaging and consumer brands representation.
“To reduce plastic waste, we must modernize our recycling system. The formation of the Recycling Leadership Council is a pivotal step toward transforming how America manages plastic waste,” said John Hewitt, a senior vice president at the Consumer Brands Association, in a statement. His association is leading the move.
“Leaders across technology, automotive, consumer goods, toys and other industries are working together to meaningfully address policies and practices that prohibit plastic recycling at scale,” he said.
The group includes representation from the Plastics Industry Association, American Chemistry Council, Vinyl Institute, Ag Container Recycling Council, Closed Loop Partners and National Lubricant Container Recycling Coalition. The Meat Institute also is involved as well as the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.
Hewett said the new group seeks the “support of policy frameworks that will unlock the investment and manufacturing innovation needed to modernize America’s aging recycling infrastructure to handle the amount and types of plastic materials discarded today.”
